10 Life Truths For Any Age

What if you could write a letter to your younger self? What would you say? What life lessons would you share?

Here’s my letter…

Dear PJ from 20 years ago,
Hey! How are you? Well, I guess that was kinda dumb to ask, since you are me and I know I was doing pretty good 20 years ago. In fact, 20 years ago is when we married loving husband and launched our personal training business.

It was a big year.

In fact, our 20’s are pretty awesome. But, we are so busy being 20-something (and taking everything for granted, like 20-somethings do) that we don’t really appreciate what the hell we have.

Hence this letter.

This letter is meant to remind you to start appreciating that “20-something life” that you have and to give you some valuable tips on how to help navigate life with grace and poise.

10 Truths You Should Know

First, learn to forgive the assholes in life. It’s not easy, but you need to learn this important step. You see, even if they were a jerk to you it doesn’t mean that it’s all about you. You don’t know their story. They may be having a bad day, someone may have been an asshole to them earlier which then put them in a bad mood, you just don’t know. So, forgive, turn the other cheek and smile (yes, you may curse at them inside your head. We aren’t saints for crying out loud.).

Second, learn to love the journey as much as getting to the destination. The journey is where you will meet all the cool people and create all the awesome memories. The destination (which we are very good at focusing on) is just the accomplishment itself.

Third, breathe. Everyday take a few moments to sit still and just breathe. These few moments of what you are going to term “slow, useless minutes” will actually rev us up and help get those creative juices running. Trust me – well, you kinda have to since I am you, and not trusting me would actually be not trusting you. Wow, this is getting to be Matrix mind-bending shit.

Fourth, don’t take those flat abs for granted. Sure you can go out and party all weekend and still rock a six-pack in class on Monday, but it’s A LOT harder to do so in your mid-40’s. So, appreciate them NOW.

Fifth, loving husband likes to sneak in McDonald’s and hides the empty wrappers in the garbage bin outside. Don’t give him too much hell though. He does put up with a lot from us.

Sixth, use sunscreen. This will save us both a lot of money in the future in eye cream, cleansers, toners, exfoliates, anti-aging moisturizers and make-up.

Seventh, quit buying the latest and greatest. It is, in the end, just crap. You can live without that sweater and I promise you that owning matching dinnerware, cutlery and placements will not bring you inner peace. Save our money and use it for trips and experiences. That’s sort of thing that we will be remembering, and yearning for more of, in our middle years.

Eighth, be kind to yourself. Love yourself and the skin that you are in. You are perfectly imperfect and embrace that.

Ninth, be kind to others. The world runs at a fast-pace and in 20 years it will be even faster. When this happens we can lose a bit of our humanity just cause we are too damn busy to care. Don’t let that happen, don’t be an asshole (refer back to tip #1). Care and be kind.

And tenth, don’t go blonde. I know the urge to try something different is ingrained in our DNA, but blonde isn’t the way to go. Trust me. We will regret that one.
