The Courage to Surrender, By Ronelle Roode Brothers

To surrender – give up control – to let go…release.  Not the easiest route to go sometimes.  I’m sure you’ve been challenged (internally) just as I have at times to accept pending change…to surrender – it can be a struggle.  Relationships, career pursuits, hopes and dreams – sometimes we have to let go and the discomfort to do so ensues, and that ill-at-ease emotions can rumble, even if deep down we know the letting go will better our lives.

What have you had to summon the courage for surrender with lately? Has it been one area of your life, or several?

Sometimes we can find ourselves in a total state of change – where we realize our inner-world has shifted so greatly that there are a myriad of things which don’t seem to work anymore.  People we once felt deeply connected to seem like distant strangers – career avenues appear at a standstill and it makes no sense to keep knocking your head against that wall while waiting for things to change.  What we often realize (in between the knocking) is that what also needs change is lurking within ourselves.  That this is time for a complete overhaul and to evaluate this fork in the road, and decide…where we want to go with our life’s journey, what it’s going to take to get there and perhaps even who we wish to join us on the next chapter (and who we need to release from blocking our pathway of enthusiastic & positive vibration.)

Over time some of our interests might remain constant – and as we broaden our perspectives, new ones appear on the horizon.  Over time, our life’s lessons test our value-systems and often remind us to “check-in” – nudging us to connect with our intuition – to not allow ourselves to become too disengaged with our true self.

And when I dissect my own approach to surrender – it can take on this appearance:  There is the knowing that a need for surrender exists – pull back a layer and there is a knowing that there is a desire for change – one more layer…the root of the struggle to surrender is compounded by fear.  Because when we’ve become used to our current state of being, even if the change will bring about good, it’s the comfort zone we’ve grown accustomed to – and there can still be fear driving us to keep things as they are.  There is also the learned practice of not wanting to hurt others, even if their very antagonistic-presence causes us much strife.

So what to do?

Well – at the beginning of a new season, a new year is a good opportunity to review, reflect – plan and imagine.  What have the past seasons & years been about? What has brought you incredible happiness of the soul? What has caused you total disappointment? What does your future vision look like and who or what do you believe will contribute to your journey in the most positive of ways?  Perhaps that good old practice of jotting down the Pros & Cons might be helpful.  A way of reviewing these thoughts in front of you – drafted as a visual in which to ponder over with added clarity.

And when you’ve felt you’ve devoted ample time to think back as well as look forward – Breathe deep……stay calm…and here it goes………find the courage to………surrender.
