When it comes to evaluating your own self-worth, there is only one opinion that should truly matter to you — your own. As most of us know, it is very easy to be your own worst critic, making it difficult to ever live up to the ridiculously high standards we set for ourselves. It’s important to love ourselves for who we are, despite the many hardships and challenges we may face. If you have ever experienced low self-esteem, you know the internal struggle that is constantly going on within your own mind, as your subconscious acts as the judge and jury when opportunities for self-criticism arise. This year, make an effort to change your actions, your attitude and find optimism when you can. Here are some tips for improving your self-esteem and learning how to be a more positive person this year.

Be Mindful of Yourself

The first step to finding a solution is recognizing there is a problem. Listen carefully to your choice of words in conversation and be aware whenever you notice negative self-talk. If we continue speaking negatively to and about ourselves, we will begin to believe our words are in fact the truth. The key is to not believe every thought in your head or everything unkind you hear. Self-criticism can cripple your confidence, so make it a point to exude positivity in every conversation you have and catch yourself whenever you speak negatively about yourself.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Another important aspect of self-confidence is practicing acceptance and being content with where you are right now. Additionally, if you find that you frequently compare yourself to others — whether it be in terms of appearance, career path or even social media presence — you may experience a very large psychological toll that can do immense damage to your mental health. Don’t put this kind of anxiety and stress on yourself to be perfect, because it’s impossible. Make the best of your current situation and work to reach your goals over time while keeping a positive outlook on life and your accomplishments.

Take Care of Yourself Physically and Mentally

There have been many studies done that have linked working out and exercising with higher self-esteem and confidence. Being healthier, whether it be in your diet, your workout regimen or even your skincare routine, can all make you a happier and more confident person. Something as simple as taking a multivitamin to support healthy hair, skin, and nails or other supplements, such as fish oil, that will boost your vitality and benefit your well-being can do wonders. Also, you should try to find time each day to relax or treat yourself. With a hectic work schedule and a family at home, finding time for yourself can be hard. It could be anything from getting your nails done with friends to going on a run outdoors. And most importantly, make sure you are getting at least 7 or 8 hours of sleep each night, as rest is important to both your mental and physical health.

Hype Yourself Up

Don’t be afraid to humbly boast about accomplishments or be outspoken about looking and feeling good. Although you may think you’ll seem arrogant or self-centered if you talk yourself up, it’s important to realize that confidence does not equal arrogance. Be proud of what you’ve accomplished, where you’ve been and what your future goals are. Let your friends and family know that you are driven, confident and a force to be reckoned with — even if that may be difficult at first. There is a lot of truth in the saying ‘fake it until you make it,’ so don’t shy away from the limelight.

You Are Not Your Circumstances

Last but not least, do not let your current social or financial situation define who you are or what you can accomplish. Every person is born with unlimited potential and can make the most of any circumstance with the right motivations and intentions. With hard work and self-confidence that you can reach your goals, the sky is the limit. Avoid self-destructive thoughts, as well as anyone in your life that contributes to your negativity. Cutting out the things that weigh you down and keep you from sustaining your mental health and welfare will have an immediate impact. Self-worth exists in all of us — it’s channeling it in a positive light that is the challenge that can be done with the proper attitude.
