A Real Leader

By Crystal Andrus Morissette

No one likes criticism—especially the kind that is neither asked for nor constructive. Most of us want others to agree with us. Agree with our ideas. Beliefs. Opinions. Facts. Of course, me too!

We want to be understood. Liked. Respected. Admired.

In fact, for some, the notion that someone thinks they are wrong, rude, unlikeable, disagreeable, whatever the judgment, can be too much to bear. Getting along, fitting in, belonging, moving with the traffic, becomes the primary need.

And while I too really genuinely do want to be liked, respected, even admired, my passion for life, expansion, truth, longevity, and the greater good is far more critical to me. Like me or not, I’m a real leader.

Leading with love and honesty isn’t always easy. Leading with facts and foresight is more important to me than making friends and pleasing others. I’ve been ruffling feathers since I can remember. Not because it’s fun or I want to but because I feel compelled to look out for those less able. Less willing. Less sure. That’s what a real leader does; they lead the strong and protect the weak. They inspire greatness while solving problems. They have a ‘one for all and all for one’ attitude. They speak for those who can’t speak. They climb for those who can’t climb; then, they reach down to help those people up.

Real Leaders care. Real Leaders show up. They get in the trenches when necessary and soar when needed, too. They inspire. Influence. Take criticism (even the unconstructive kind) without lashing out or dismantling someone else’s self-esteem. They believe in good. They believe in life. Trust. Love. Expansion. Greatness. People. Humanity. But they’re also discerning, wise, and reasonable.

A Real Leader loves people. Period. Loves all people. Not just the ones who love you back. Not just the ones who think you’re right. Not just the ones who look like you.

And while I am trimming down my friend list on Facebook to limit the number of disturbing things I’m reading from people I thought were of sound mind (LOL, yes, I’m being judgy), I will never turn my back on a fellow human in need.

Not ever. Not a chance. Not you. Not now.

I may not like you. LOL You may not like me. I may not agree with you, and vice versa. But I will always protect the sanctity of life. People over profits. Period. People over productivity. Over religion. Beliefs. Propaganda. Boredom. Even frustration. Certainly, over economics and skin color. That’s a given! But for my sanity, I’m going to protect me. My heart. My soul. My spirit.

That’s what a Real Leader does, too.

We lead by example. We make hard choices. We know the moment of absolute clarity may never come, but we weigh out the facts, first and foremost, then trust our intuition.

Here are the facts: A pandemic has swept across the globe many, many times throughout history, killing millions upon millions of people–one epidemic in 1350 called “The Black Death” wiped out 1/3 of the world’s population. It also happened 100 years ago. Two hundred years ago. Three hundred years ago. I could go back to 430 BC – Athens.

The fact that only thousands have died so far from COVID-19 doesn’t change the reality of the virus. It just means for the first time in history, we have better leaders who are listening to the science, understanding the mathematics of how to flatten the curve, and for the most part, it is working. That’s what is supposed to happen. We’re trying to stop this before it kills millions. And so far, it’s working! Together, we’ll stand but divided we will most certainly fall.

If you don’t trust me, will you at least trust history?
