Our featured Simply Woman Superstar this week is Marlo Rutz. Apart from being a Certified Master Empowerment Coach through The S.W.A.T. Institute, she’s also an award-winning comedian and speaker who spent over thirty years coaching and mentoring young women competing in the Miss America Scholarship Program. Not to mention, she’s also a wife and the mother of six fabulous children! Marlo is genuinely such a dynamic, fun, and vibrant woman!

Looking back on her own journey, she admits that she became ‘an addict’ in the third grade. She was addicted to people-pleasing, self-doubt, worry, and sabotage – a feeling that followed her through middle school. After a difficult childhood that included her father being absent, being bullied, and molested at 11, she began creating a ‘story’ of who she was and what she was worth.

“For many years, I handled these situations by judging myself and minimizing my worth. Walking around with shame, guilt, and so much pain over just being who I was. Being very uncomfortable within my skin. I somehow conditioned myself to believe that my worth was only determined by the validation of others.”

As Marlo learned to forgive and develop her faith and her confidence, she understood that what happened to her wasn’t her fault, nor was it her shame to carry.

“My tagline for my ‘Story Problems’ keynote is “Problems will always be a part of your story but don’t let your story become your problem.”

Marlo always knew she was meant to help empower other women to find their voice and remove the obstacles that kept them from reaching their dreams (while sprinkling in a little light and laughter to keep it real!). She started on this journey by mentoring young women in the Miss America Scholarship Program for 30 years and has now become a Certified Master Empowerment Coach through my school, The S.W.A.T. Institute (YAY!), as well as a brilliant keynote speaker and an award-winning comedian.

She’s spoken at women’s conferences, churches, marketing events, Boss Babes, Gilda’s Club, Chamber of Commerce, MOJO Volleyball, Mark Ridley’s Club, S.H.E. Con, Greater Calling, Terumo Corporations, Chick-Fil-A, and the National Christian Comedy Association Conference. Her goal on stage is always to share insights that help us see things differently.

Marlo describes finding The S.W.A.T. Institute as a ‘divine intervention.’ After telling her friend that she felt God calling her to empower women and make them laugh, her friend told her about our school.

“I was in the process of checking out other schools, but I loved how S.W.A.T. focused on women, and I loved Crystal’s passion and expertise,” she shares. “There are so many takeaways. I use them all in my coaching and my workshops. I would have to say my favorite highlights are the archetypes and sub archetypes. I use the levels of consciousness all of the time— codependency behaviors, ‘younger version of you’ work. Too much to list because I loved it all.”

Apart from being a fantastic coach, today Marlo has her own faith-based weekly show on Facebook called Coffee Chats at the Cubby Hole (psst… I’ll be on there soon!). It’s now being broadcasted on the Creative Motion Network via Roku. She’s also continuing to conduct her own empowerment workshops and keynote speeches. Apart from that, Marlo is in the midst of writing a one-woman Comedy and Empowerment show that she hopes to take on tour and is writing her own book called God Sprinkles that she hopes to launch in the fall of 2021. And on top of it all, she’s continually working on growing her faith and being a mom and wife that strives every day to be as present as possible. “I don’t want to miss out on this season.”

Be sure to watch as Marlo and I have a fun conversation about empowerment, breakthroughs, and more!
