As a new coach, you are going to have to market your business to enrol clients yet I hear many coaches say “I don’t like selling”, “I don’t want to annoy people” or “I need help with my marketing”.

If you can relate to these comments, then the first thing that needs to happen is a mindset shift.

Marketing and sales are the lifeblood of your business. If you aren’t sharing your passionate message with the world, then it’s going to be awfully hard for clients to find you.  Without a strong marketing strategy, you won’t be able to get your amazing program into the hands and hearts of those who need it most.

What happens when you find a fun new product or service that you just love?

You usually tell all your friends and family about it, right?  You get excited, grab your phone and share the news so they can benefit too. Sometimes, you might even post on social media how much you like it.

This is how you want to look at your marketing. Marketing is simply you showing up consistently to share something you are very excited about, sharing something that changes people’s lives. It won’t be for everyone and that’s ok. You’ll keep sharing with the intention of your message reaching those that need your help.

There are 3 main ways to market your business. You can write, speak or network. That’s it. Anything else is an extension of one of these things.

So your first step will be to choose one of these methods, implement and practice your craft and when you feel proficient in that strategy, then you can add others.

The marketing technique you choose, should match your personal style and preferences. Choose the one that sounds like the most fun. If you aren’t having fun, then you aren’t going to want to do it for very long and your audience will feel your dissatisfied energy on the other side of your marketing…. which will counteract your marketing efforts. There are so many different ways that you can market your biz so you’ll be able to choose a way that is fun and effective for you.

If you love to write, then you can write blogs, articles for publications, a book, email newsletters and social media posts. Writing is a very powerful way to connect with your audience and spread your message. If you decide to start with writing as your marketing piece, then you’ll want to create an email list. An email list is a very important piece to your business as it’s a list of your potential clients regardless of what is happening with social media and their forever changing algorithms. You can create a pdf, or ebook as a free opt-in offer to start collecting email addresses. As your list grows, it’s crucial to consistently nurture your audience with your content.

If you love to speak, you can offer workshops and talks, create videos and live streams for both your website, and contact local organizations and communities for speaking opportunities. You’ll want to craft a signature talk that informs your audience and inspires them to work with you in your coaching program. Then give this talk everywhere and get known for it. Make sure to have a sign in sheet for your audience to leave their name, number and email address.

If you want to take it to the next level, You could also record your signature talk and post the video on your website, Vimeo or YouTube or IGTV accounts. You can also offer it as a free gift in exchange for your audience’s email addresses to build up your email list. Instead of writing emails, maybe you’d prefer to send out short video or audio messages to your community. Instagram and Facebook both are great platforms to share your video messages with your community.

If you love to connect, then start growing your network and community. You can join networking clubs, Facebook groups, forums and other online communities. Join the chamber of commerce or volunteer your time and take the time to build relationships.  If you can’t find a networking organization that feels right, you can always create your own either in person or online.  This allows you to not only build a network of ideal clients but position yourself as an expert and leader. Make sure that you are taking the time to authentically get to know others and authentically share about what you do. Share business cards and make sure to follow up after the events.

Regardless of how you decide to share your message, you’ll want to make sure your messaging is relevant to your ideal client, explains how you can help potential clients clearly and feels authentic and enjoyable to you. You’ll also want to create a schedule to consistently share your marketing messages. It takes your potential clients seeing your message at least 7 times and often more before they will take action.

One way to create consistent content without feeling incredibly overwhelmed is to repurpose your content. That means you take one piece of long form content and then you break it down to create multiple pieces of content. Let’s say you start by writing a blog titled 5 Tips to Set and Hold Firm Boundaries.  Then you write an email talking about the benefits of reading this blog and a little sample of it with a link to read the full blog on your website. Then you break it down into 5 memes, each with a different tip and short caption to post on social media. Repurposing content in this way allows you to increase your visibility, to extend the life of your content, to work less and to get more eyes on your content, with less effort and no overwhelm.
