Stories is have been told for thousands of years as a way to educate, entertain and connect people. Story-telling is the oldest of the arts and it’s by far the most powerful method that leaders today use to influence, teach and inspire others. This is why you want to incorporate your personal stories into your marketing efforts.

When you are creating content as a marketing strategy, you want your content to be as effective as possible right?  You want to know that it’s engaged with, remembered and making a difference.

Stories are incredibly important for marketers for the following reasons:

  1. Connection. Dopamine is released in our brain when we hear or read a story which allows us to feel an emotional connection to the storyteller. This emotional connection makes your story and your content 22% more memorable, therefor more effective. If you combine data, facts and figures with your stories, you’ll be able to influence your reader both intellectually and emotionally, which is a powerful tool in shaping how others see you, your brand and offers.
  2. Trust. Neural coupling is when the listener’s brain actively mirrors the brain activity of the speaker and it develops greater understanding, and trust of the storyteller. Trust is crucial when you are hoping your reader will buy from you. Zig Ziglar says If people like you they’ll listen to you, but if they trust you they’ll do business with you.”
  3. Unique Edge. With more and more people coming online to do business, it may feel that your market is crowded, so how do you stand out? Tell stories. Your stories. Stories are unique to us, as no one has ever experienced life exactly how we have so they allow us to differentiate ourselves in an authentic way.

Ok, so now you know why it’s so important, let’s dive into the how to use stories to improve your marketing.

You’ll want to start first by creating your core brand story, which is going to be about how your business came to be, the why behind your brand. This story is crucial to share your values, gifts, mission and what’s important to you.

Next you’ll want to brainstorm any stories that relate to your business and your readers. You’ll want to ask yourself “How is this valuable to my audience?”

These stories could be about the biggest obstacle you’ve faced, testimonials from clients, or yourself, or they can be about what’s going on behind the scenes.

Story telling is one of the easiest ways to get more out of your content marketing so you’re going to want to make it a priority. It’s about sharing your voice, values and authentic self with others to naturally attract your dream clients. Not only is it going to make your content last longer and more effective, it’s also going to help you get noticed, increase sales and build an authentic brand.
