(Or the case for having a small but hyper engaged/enrolled list of customers and clients versus a big giant list of fluff and freeloaders)

The art of doing business as a messenger is learning how to balance your own needs for self-expression with the needs of your audience of BUYERS. I’m learning and want to share with you that there is a SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE between having an audience of clients and customers (buyers) versus just having an audience. I’ve had the good fortune to have both!

This year I have shifted my focus from building a list of people who want something for nothing to building/nurturing and more deeply and profoundly serving the people who are engaged, enrolled and invested. I was speaking with a colleague in August – she wanted me to participate in a big “Give-away” and while I have done this in the past – to be in alignment with my own intention to build a list of “buyers” – I declined. When we went deeper into the conversation together I asked her very specifically about her own numbers to see if she could illuminate for me any reason why it might be a good idea for me to in fact participate. She’s been in the business over a decade and has a list of over 15,000 people. Yay for her.

15,000 people seems like a good chunk of people out of which one would imagine there would be a lot of buyers.

However… when asked directly – how many of those people on your list have been buyers over the years? The answer was… 450. So I told her directly that she only has a list of 450 people. The other 14,550 people are observers or audience. They might be watching or listening to what her message is but they aren’t being influenced to invest further with her in making the changes that she has to offer.

My comment to her that she’s really got a list of 450 kind of shocked her – and it helped her to see the truth that she’s been kidding herself about what’s real in her business and that she’s been “hiding” behind her list of 15000 rather than stepping in to that list and asking directly “What can I do to serve you in a way that serves me and my business too?”

My intent with this post is to remind you not to be fooled by inflated numbers that have no substance behind them.

Cultivate a smaller more engaged list of customers and clients – save your very best for them – and please don’t ever compare yourself to someone else because you only are seeing what they are willing to show you unless of course you employ your psychic capacities to “see through” the illusion.
