Many of us are familiar with the term “Youth Index” as a way of determining the physical age of our bodies. But what about the youth index of our soul?  How do we gauge the health of our spirit – how do we measure the vibrancy of our soul?

As we age, we sometimes forget to nurture the very nuggets that keep us enthusiastic about life – we forget to nurture our spirit.  Quite often as we get older, we have a tendency to focus more on the “serious concerns of adulthood” and push aside the creative adventures that boost our spirits – those fun-filled outlets which put a smile on our face & heart.

When you were young, what was it that made your youthful soul sing?  Was it sitting out in the sun, art supplies on the table, and drawing to your heart’s content?  Or maybe it was listening to music and passing the time away writing poetry that you had no plans on publishing – it was just the sheer joy of putting random, moving thoughts to paper.

There are so many ways in which we can re-capture our youthful and creative self – crafts, beading, sculpting, dancing, making angels in the snow – the list is yours to explore.

One of my dearest friends, a woman who was much older than myself – was (and still is) one of my life’s greatest mentors. She had enjoyed an amazing career in the Dance-Arts and after she retired, she continued to enjoy a multitude of artistic ventures. She attended art classes, designed costumes for studios – she even continued dancing, teaching classes to seniors along with running a small performance troupe. Yep – in her retirement years she still took to the stage with vibrancy unparalleled by many younger than herself.

She passed on a few years ago (well in her late 80’s) – but her legacy (to me) was living life to the fullest includes the joys of creative pursuits, owning an adventurous spirit & being open to discovery & learning.

To this day I can still hear the upbeat tone of her voice, the empowering joy of her laugh. I look at old photos of us, of her – and I see the sparkle in her eyes and the fullness of the smile on her face. My dear friend had a radiant spirit long into her retirement years.

A youthful spirit, a soul that resonates with creativity, happiness and exuberance – it also lends itself to nourishing the (physical) body.  Remember that saying “laughter is the best medicine”? It really is nonsensical to dismiss the value of maintaining a youthful spirit.

So in all our day-to-day existences – ensure that you are contributing to the youth index of your soul along with maintaining the health of your body.

It’s body, mind and spirit – nurturing and rejuvenation of each facet go hand-in-hand.

As you reflect on this topic, you’ll find further inspiration guided by the Goddess-message below, as well as listening to the suggested Musical-Motivator.  Musical-Motivators are selected as the corresponding “musical voice” representing that particular Goddess. Enjoy!

message from the goddesses

Hindu Goddess, Sarasvati, encourages us to include creativity into our lifestyle. Aim for freedom of expression rather than perfectionism – rough drafts of whatever creative outlet you choose need not be critiqued so harshly. Simply enjoy the process and applaud your efforts to be unique.

Whether as a profession or a hobby, by incorporating creative pursuits – painting, writing, dancing, music etc. – our spirits are uplifted and a rejuvenating mood keeps our soul’s journey a happy one.
