To Be a Twenty-Something Again

Some of the best memories in our life come from our twenties. We lived, we laughed and we loved. It was the time that we acted without thinking first and took a few risks. But, as we grow older we learn more about ourselves and become more observant of the world. We realize that some of the crazy things we did back then, we wouldn’t be so likely to do now.

If you could go back to your twenties, what would you have told yourself?

To follow your dreams

Now is the time to find your place in the world, go out there and live it. Never find yourself second-guessing anything. The best thing you can do is to lead with your heart and rely on your gut. When you’re faced with a tough decision, you have to do what’s best for you. This doesn’t necessarily mean settling for a job just because it pays more. If you’re going to be happier at another place, it’s worth it to keep searching until you find the right fit for you. Set goals for yourself and don’t stop until you achieve them.

It’s important to take care of your body

Neglecting to take care of your body when you’re young, will lead to more health problems than you’d imagine. You need to exercise regularly. Getting just 30 minutes of exercise each week can reduce your risk of developing heart disease, cancer, and other life-threatening health issues. Equally as important as exercise, is eating healthy. You can’t live off pasta and chocolate without eating some fruits and vegetables also. It’s all about balance because trust me there really will be days when you deserve a piece of cake. Go to the doctor for your yearly physical and always be proactive about anything that seems out of the ordinary for your body.

Invest in your future

Secure your financial future and invest in it early. When you’re in your twenties, you’re probably dreaming of retiring at a young age and living the rest of your life out on a private island. As lovely as this sounds, you’ll be working for the rest of your life if you don’t start saving your money early. Focus on putting your money into savings accounts and paying off your student loans. The more debt you accumulate, the more you’ll feel like you’re drowning later on in life. Learn how to be smart with your money. Make little changes like eating out so much less than you do. You can always cook yourself a much healthier and cheaper alternative, trust me. Don’t be ashamed to choose to buy the $6 bottle of wine rather than the $30.

Know the difference between a need and a want

You have to learn to prioritize certain items over others. You may not always be able to afford everything that you want, but you have to pay the bills and take care of yourself. I wish that I knew the importance of buying investment pieces rather than cheaper alternatives that I ended up replacing more frequently. In the long run, I was spending way more. Investing in a quality bra that properly fit me, or a decent set of pots and pans would have been worth the splurge.

Find your people in life

Only surround yourself with people that make you a better person. It’s okay to get rid of the toxic people in your life who bring you down. You need support and love, and only true friends can provide you with that. When you find yourself questioning why you let someone walk all over you or why you let them negatively influence you, it’s time to let go of the friendship. There will always be new opportunities for meeting people.

So, here’s to our twenties. Gone but certainly never forgotten!
