USE THE CHAOS OF LIFE TO WAKE UP.

This simple, yet powerful, phrase in white font against a cheery pink background greets me every time I open my laptop. It puts things in perspective, no matter what kind of day I may be having.

If I am not experiencing any chaos, it reminds me to thank my lucky stars and be grateful for all I have: my home, health, partner, family, friends, work, God-given gifts, life experiences and so much more.

On the other hand, if the day isn’t going according to plan, it makes me pause to consider what is really happening and why. Is there something I am missing or avoiding that needs my immediate attention? Have I given my power away? Am I emotionally disconnected from the task at hand? Should I even be working on this “plan” that day? Am I creating, causing or imagining the chaos in any way? Am I contributing to it in any way? How am I contributing and why? Why am I accepting it? Am I taking this personally? What is it reflecting within me? What spell or belief am I under? Is it something I can control or can I just release my belief or plan, go with the flow and see where that leads me? There are always lessons to be learned from chaos.

Chaos is only the messenger. What is the message? Maybe, it’s as simple as “STOP!” or “Breathe!” Sometimes, prayer may be the only answer. Ask: “Talk to me. What do you want me to do with this day, this life?”

The trick is to humble up, be open and not take anything personally. But, how do we do that?

I recently listened to a lecture Dr. Caroline Myss delivered in London, England, in 2019. She mentioned a professor who opened her first lecture on Buddhism with: “Whether or not you like me is of no consequence to me. My role is to pass on knowledge to you, so let’s begin.” Might this also be the message of chaos?

In times of chaos or uncertainty, we tend to contract, retreat into defence mode and make it personal. Perhaps, at such times, the professor’s statement is a good mantra to adopt and keep in mind for times when we’re not thinking clearly or feeling anxiety.

Dr. Myss never forgot her professor’s introduction. And now, nor will I.
