There are many factors that can cause a person to start feeling depressed. Sometimes even when life is great, we can still suffer from depression. People often wonder why they are dealing with depression when things don’t seem all that bad.

When you’re experiencing depression, it’s hard to understand why and how you’re feeling. Once you learn the symptoms of depression, you can source the cause and get help.

What is Depression?

Many people think depression is synonymous with sadness. Actually, it is much more than that. People who suffer from depression can feel a lack of energy and motivation. They also don’t get pleasure from the things that they used to. Even hobbies you love can seem uninteresting and tiresome.

One significant difference between depression and sadness is that sadness doesn’t affect self-esteem. Depression can make you dislike yourself and have deep feelings of worthlessness.

Signs of Depression

Depression leads to many issues that can crop up in your daily life. If not addressed, depression also causes problems in your personal relationships. Some common signs of depression are changes in eating habits. This may mean overeating or not eating enough food at all.

Another sign of depression is not sleeping enough, like insomnia, or sleeping far too much. Everyone is different, so the way depression presents varies from person to person.

If you’re dealing with severe depression you may have thoughts of hurting yourself. If this is the case, you will want to get help immediately to deal with these issues. Getting help could mean going to a doctor, seeing a counselor, or both.

Causes of Depression When Things Seem Fine

People struggle to identify depression in themselves, especially when things are pretty good. So, even if things are going well, you have to consider the internal circumstances too. People think having a good job and home life should make them immune from depression. That is not the case.

Even if you have a good life, you need to be mindful to avoid depression. If you can’t, then you may want to test what internal things are preventing you from finding happiness.

This may be a good time for you to re-evaluate what you want out of life. Even if you have financial stability and a decent job, it may not be what you want. It is normal for people to convince themselves they should be happy because things are good.

This is not always a fulfilling way to live. It might be a good option to discuss with your family how you’re feeling and try to figure out what needs to change. Sometimes small changes can make a huge difference to your feeling towards life.

This could be setting boundaries or talking with a therapist weekly. The most important thing you can do is talk with your loved ones and consult your doctor to come up with a solution.
